There are ten facts that you should know about the free cell phones that the government is giving away. This is funded by the FCC or the Federal Communications Commission. The federal program is called Lifeline Assistance that gives out free cell phones with free minutes for low-income citizens. There are already millions of individuals who have availed of it, but there still some more people who are not aware of it. Here are the ten facts to make you understand about the Lifeline program.

The individuals who can avail this project are those who are accepting government assistance like food stamps, National School Lunch, Medicaid, and a lot more.
More than 10 million of phones have been given away since the project started in the year 1999. In 2008, from regular phones it evolved to wireless devices, which are handed out to deserving citizens.
Not all states can avail of the project. There are only 38 states that are benefiting from it and pretty soon, the other areas will experience it as well.
The program is not limited to legal citizens of the country. Even the illegal aliens can avail of it since there is no verification system. However, this would result to reduced funds for the legal residents.
Another criterion is if your household income is 150% or less than that of the poverty level of the eight specific states.
The other states will only require 135% which is the maximum income of the federal poverty guidelines.

One of the reasons why this project is built is so that the low income household can use the device for emergency situations. This is why the minutes are limited and sometimes not enough to last for a month. It will be wise to save it for more important matters.
The process is easy for anyone who will apply for it. Proof of income will be needed as well as the document that will prove that you are under the government assistance programs. Once you are qualified for it, you will have to wait for a week for the cell phone to arrive at your home.
The project is only good for a year. If you wish to extend or to cancel your subscription, you have to inform your local provider before your term ends.
This program of the government is amazing and beneficial for individuals who are earning less and could not afford to have their one phone line. They can stay connected with their loved one and even use it when emergency situations occur.
