What Is A LNB And How Can It Affect Satellite Viewing?

You may not know what a low noise block (LNB) is but it's one of the most important parts of your satellite dish. Satellite installers may actually call it THE most important part of a satellite dish.
A LNB is a convertor that takes low level microwave signals from the satellite dish and amplifies them. The LNB then changes the signals to a lower frequency and passes them through the cable to the television receiver inside the house. The LNB picks up different bands and waves which are converted into different channels. The LNB can be located on the arm that protrudes from the satellite dish and without it there would be no television signal and that's why a good TV aerial installer will always check the LNB for faults if a home is having trouble receiving a television signal.

When a LNB Goes Wrong

If you are experiencing difficulties in obtaining a clear signal and all the digital channels you usually get then it's important to contact your satellite installers and ask them to check the LNB. The LNB performs many tasks when receiving the signal, converting and changing the waves before finally transmitting it down through the cable, and although they are generally reliable they can go wrong when performing one or more parts of their role in transmitting channels. A good TV aerial installer will understand the finer implications of the role this component plays to ensuring a full and clear digital TV service.

LNBs can be damaged in high winds and storms, although they are strong their location, on the arm that sits away from the dish, can make them susceptible to weather damage. If your digital television service has suffered after a storm or high winds then most satellite installers will thoroughly check the LNB if there is no obvious damage to the satellite dish.

Don't Attempt to Fix an LNB Yourself, Call in an Expert
Although the LNB is a small part of the satellite dish it is very important. If you suspect the LNB on your satellite dish has become damaged, or disconnected in any way, don't attempt to fix it yourself. LNBs are complex parts of a satellite dish that perform many functions. Damaging even a small part of the component can damage the LNB beyond repair. Call in a reliable TV aerial installer, preferably the team of satellite installers who installed your dish to begin with to complete a professional check. The problem could be a simple one that's easy to fix.
